Bill Gates: "If you gave me only one wish for the next 50 years, it'd be to invent the thing that halves the cost energy with no CO2. This is the one with the greatest impact."

Pretty sweeping statement for someone involved with many public health and welfare projects… (around minute 17:00)

Gates: “We need an energy miracle. Usually we don’t have a deadline. This is a case where we have to drive at full sped and get a miracle on a tight timeline.”

“All the batteries on Earth can store less than 10 minutes of the world’s energy needs.”

The video of his talk just went online.

My favorite parts are near the end, especially the Q&A on new nukes (fast breeder reactors that burn a U238 duraflame log for 60 years, with 99% efficiency vs 1% for today’s U235 reactors. No fuel to reload or waste to ship around. Existing nuclear waste could be used as fuel. He is funding Nathan Myhrvold’s Terrapower, which be testing this new reactor… in Russia). Around minute 19:00

By a show of hands, 75% of the TED audience was already pro-nuke as the solution.

“I grew up on a steady diet of sci fi, reading on the hour-long bus ride each way to school. I did not have any video games growing up. I was not saturated in media landscapes. When I read books, I had to create the images in my head.” (ironic recursion)

“At 15, I decided I wanted to be a scuba diver. I lived in Canada, 600 miles from the ocean. So I went to Buffalo across the border to get certified, in a YMCA swimming pool, in the middle of the winter. I had never seen the ocean, and first saw it two years later when we moved to California.”

“And now I have spent 3000 hours underwater, with 500 of that in subs.”

A surprise guest at TED today, Sergey spoke openly about Google’s new posture with China. Just before him was a presentation on the Chinese GhostNet global spying network, and Brin said Google was spear-phished in a similar way as the Dalai Lama.

Sergey Brin:

"Things started going downhill, especially after the Olympics. There’s been a lot more blocking going on since then. Also our other sites, YouTube and whatnot, have been blocked. So the situation really took a turn for the worse."

“We have made a statement of intent. We intend to stop censoring, and if we can do that, within the confines of Chinese policy, we’d love to continue Google.cn and our operations there. And if we cannot, then we’ll do as much as we can, but we don’t want to run a service that’s politically censored. I’m not talking about things like porn and gambling. Political censorship.”

“Our focus has been what’s best for the Chinese people. It’s not about our particular revenue or profit"

“I don’t think the question of whether this is the Chinese government is that important. I think that the Chinese government has tens of millions of people in it. If you look at the army and the associated army, that’s larger than many countries. So even if there were a Chinese government agent behind it, it might represent a fragment of policy. I think that there are many people there who have different views.”

I began to wonder if the same could be said of Google. Since this was impromptu and unscripted, and a delicate corporate PR subject to say the least, I wonder if all of Google management is of the same mind, here and in China.
